Why We Built ClawMate: The Story Behind Your Claw Assistant

It Started With a Group Chat

Every week, someone in our group chat would ask the same question: "How do I set up OpenClaw?"

And every week, one of us would spend 30 minutes walking them through Docker, environment variables, bot tokens, and reverse proxies. Most of the time, something would go wrong. A port conflict. A missing API key. A Docker image that would not pull.

We love OpenClaw. It is one of the best open-source projects for building AI assistants. But the gap between "this looks amazing" and "I have a working bot" is enormous for anyone who is not a developer.

The Weekend That Changed Everything

One Saturday night, our co-founder Vance was helping a friend set up OpenClaw for the third time. The friend had tried twice before and given up both times. Docker kept crashing. The Telegram bot token was not being recognized. The AI model was not responding.

After two hours of debugging over Discord, Vance said: "What if I just hosted this for you?"

He spun up a Railway instance, configured everything, and in 5 minutes the friend had a working AI assistant in Telegram. The friend's reaction: "Why isn't this a product?"

What We Learned

Over the next few weeks, we set up OpenClaw instances for 8 more friends and family members. Every single one had the same experience:

  1. They tried to self-host and got stuck
  2. We helped them through it or hosted it for them
  3. They loved the AI assistant once it was working
  4. They never wanted to touch the infrastructure again

The pattern was clear: people want the AI assistant, not the DevOps experience.

Building ClawMate

So we built ClawMate. The idea is simple: take everything hard about setting up OpenClaw and make it one click.

  • Pick your AI model (GPT-4, Claude, or Gemini)
  • Connect your messaging apps (Telegram, WhatsApp)
  • Name your assistant and set its personality
  • Click deploy

Under the hood, ClawMate provisions a dedicated cloud instance, configures OpenClaw, sets up your channels, and deploys your bot — all in under 5 minutes.

Why "Claw Assistant"?

Our name ClawMate is a play on OpenClaw. And since we are wrapping OpenClaw, we figured our mascot should be a lobster — the creature with the best claws. Hence, "Your Claw Assistant."

It also helps that "lobster" is a memorable and unique brand in a sea of generic AI assistant names.

What is Next

We are just getting started. Our roadmap includes:
